Terrazzo creates atmosphere and premium texture
The site is in the former Shanghai Metallurgical Mining Machinery Factory, a small single-storey slope roof warehouse built in 1958, covering an area of 435 square meters. Inside this rectangular space, due to the renovation, the original metal industrial traces of the building have almost disappeared. Only the triangular roof trusses and the dormer windows on the roof still have the characteristics of the workshops of that period.
Along the original narrow dormer window on the roof, the designer used white cones to undertake the roof and introduce light, cleverly forming a skylight collection and amplification device. The sunlight from the dormer window hits the inclined surface inside the cone and is reflected into the space. At different times, going upstairs from the circular spiral staircase, you can see sunlight being drawn into the interior, casting light spots on the black terrazzo side walls or on the furniture exhibits directly below.
